Being able to effectively set short term and long term goals is not as easy as it sounds. Goal setting and goal management are actually valuable skills. As such, you can reasonably expect some type of interview question about this task.
Always be clear about the actual goals and explain the plan you have for achieving them.
Interview Question: How have you gone about setting short-term goals and long-term goals for yourself or your team? What steps did you take along the way to keep yourself accountable?
There are no tricks to this type of question. It’s really just about proving that you have some type of goal setting system. You want to show that you understand the work that goes into achieving goals. Try your best to show that you have these skills, and you’ll impress the employer.
How to Answer:
“I have always been a firm believer in some type of SMART goal system, where we create goals that are specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timely. Whatever goal we choose, we come up with sub-goals that will help us reach it. We also set deadlines that we know we can meet and public tracking so we all know what we’re working on and when.
The public nature of these goals also helps with accountability, as no one wants let down their team. If someone does fall behind, we are able to ask them if they need help, or we can bring up their lack of productivity with evidence, and see what solutions we could come up with.”
Almost any answer is a good answer here. As long as you are specific, you should be able to impress the interviewer. However, if you’re looking for bonus points, consider bringing up a real life example. If you can show how your setting short term and long term goals helped the company make money, your chances of getting the hire are even better.
