“No one ever attains very eminent success by simply doing what is required of him; it is the amount and excellence of what is over and above the required that determines the greatness of ultimate distinction.” ~Charles Kendall Adams
You need to have some way of knowing whether or not you are doing a good job. You cannot rely on others to tell you if you are successful – you need to know for yourself, so that you can figure out where to be better or be satisfied with a job well done.
How to Answer
If you are asked how you measure success, focus on your professional life and describe the goals you set forth for yourself. You cannot be successful if you do not have goals. Make sure those goals are both difficult and attainable.
“If I try my best and I complete the task, I consider myself successful.”
… Okay, but how does this make you sound like a great employee? Remember that ever question is your opportunity to make yourself desirable.
“I try to set goals that meet or beat expectations, and work as hard as I can to complete those goals. If I make mistakes along the way, then I know I can improve and still have work to do, but if I reach those goals and achieve my desired outcome, I consider that a success.”
You don’t need to go into great detail, but showing that you try to go above and beyond and that you pay attention to mistakes is a good way to show you are a thoughtful, hardworking individual.
